Best Tips for Leveraging Social Media in the Job Search

Hello! I am looking for insight and guidance around the best way to use social media to get a job. How are recruiters using it to find candidates and what are some tips for a job seeker?

Use all of them and make sure they are consistent and include appropriate key words. Some are manual, some idea use correlation software."

Statistics by outsourcing firms show the following:

Networking - 2 People per week = 1 Year to find your job

10 people per week = 6 months

20 people per week = 90 days...

So, for social media to work it must use relationship managed environments. Your best bet is LinkedIn for what you're seeking, then drive awareness to your LinkedIn profile via twitter, google, and blogging etc.

There is a format to use. Feel free to friend me and I can show you some basics.

Chad Hatten.

I've not had much luck with linkedin myself.  Nor has facebook or twitter been of any use.

@chadhatten has been totally useless actually, as has my chad hatten facebook page.

Facebook:  Use in combination with http://www.simplyhired.com This will tell you what companies your friends work at and gives you a more personal approach to asking about job leads.  Rather than posting a status update saying "I'm looking for work, anyone know who's hiring?" use SH to create personal direct messages to your friends.

"Hello [Friend],

How have you been?  I hope things are going well for you.  As you know, I have recently started looking for work, and I was wondering if you knew if [Friend's Company] is looking for anyone with my qualifications.  If so, would you be willing to help me get in touch with them?  If not, thank you for checking.

I really appreciate it!

Thanks,

Twitter:  Include a link to your LinkedIn profile, and connect with recruiters, job listings, HR professionals, etc.  Use hash tags to get more visibility.  Don't lurk, be outgoing and aggressive.  Follow companies you'd like to join so you have some idea of current topics brought up by the company.  During interviews this can show that you're paying attention to the company.

LinkedIn:  This is not a passive social media site.  Passive users will not see anything happen.  This isn't careerbuilder.com or monster.com.  You need to network and do so actively.  Start with people you know personally.  From there join some groups in industries you want to get into.  Be active and start connecting with people.  As your network grows keep checking the Jobs section and apply to jobs you're interested in.

Open Networkers - Also Known as LIONs, these are people who buck the official LI dogma of networking with only whom you know.  The general belief is that by being open to meeting new people to network with, you get expanded visibility and more leads.  To do so effectively, you must be a selective LION.  That is, be open to meeting new people but only in the industries and locations that will actually serve a purpose.  If you are looking for work in the USA mainland, someone from Nepal may not be the best choice to network with.  Look at their connections, and their past employment to make a determination.
