Teaching Philosophy
My primary objective as a teacher is to provide the learners with pertinent information that will enhance their knowledge and skill level in which they can utilize within their chosen careers. I know from experience that the only way for me to be an effective teacher is by first being an effective leader. It can be assumed that the two titles have some close similarities. However, they differ in many ways. Teaching can be defined in several different ways. A teacher is a person who teaches or instructs, especially as a profession; instructor (Dictionary.com). On the other hand, a leader is a person who has a vision, a drive and commitment to achieve that vision, and the skills to make it happen (About.com). Therefore, a teacher must possess the qualities of a leader to have a vision for the learner’s success and progress. As a teacher, I will have the learner’s best interest in mind. It is vital that I convey the information from any course that I teach in a manner that is comprehensible for the learner. Another vital component of my vision as a leader/teacher is to eliminate any barriers of communication. I would like for each learner to feel compelled to ask me anything that they may not comprehend correctly.
I believe that as a teacher I should have an “open door policy” in regards to communication and feedback pertaining to the lessons being taught. A teacher can only be an effective teacher by first being a leader due to the fact that a leader is committed to achieving their vision. As a teacher with a vision for the learner’s success I would commit myself completely and whole heartedly to their progress. However, the learner must also put forth an effort and have the desire to learn. In every situation in which the learner put forth the effort and has the desire to learn; I will go over and beyond the call of duty to teach them. Teaching and leading is my primary goal and my sole purpose to the learners. Being a LEADER first defines my values as a teacher:
Love: A teacher must have love for others and the service that they are providing to the learners. As a teacher, I will be passionate towards the learner’s needs and ensure that I am doing my part as their teacher.
Enhance: An effective teacher’s goal set should include the enhancement of the learner’s skills and abilities. The students should be able to take something from the course that they could utilize for a lifetime.
Ability: A teacher should also have the ability to convey knowledge to the learners. Knowledge without the ability to convey it is useless. Therefore as a teacher I plan on being able to instill knowledge within the learners.
Desire: An effective teacher should possess the desire to be a teacher. Teaching is an important role in today’s society on every level. Therefore, people that are assuming a teacher’s position should take it seriously and have the desire to be successful in the position.
Enrichment: Another goal of a teacher should be to make the learner’s education level more meaningful. The teacher should provide the learner with information that would positively impact their careers.
Resources: A great leader should ensure that each learner is provided every resource available for them to succeed. This usually derives from drafting a comprehensible syllabus and providing thorough instructions.
In conclusion, learning is a lifetime journey that cannot be satisfied by one teacher or in one course. However, as a teacher my goals are to: be a positive impact for the learners, enhance their knowledge and skill level, and to provide them with information that they can utilize for a lifetime. I know that I can only fulfill those goals by first becoming an effective leader due to the fact that a leader is committed to a vision for the learners. I am not implying that I will be the “perfect teacher” however; I am striving for excellence.
