Today I came across an interesting post from Mashable that examined what people look at on an online profile page. According to the post, the results were compiled by a startup called EyeTrackShop, which as the name suggests, runs eye tracking studies.
This study was a fairly small sample, however there was a particular observation that stood out to me - the job title received more attention than profile photo on LinkedIn. Additionally the content on top wins, meaning that if a user has to scroll down on the page, that content might get overlooked.
Another factor to keep in mind is identity protection. Be mindful of what information you are sharing whether it's your profile page on universe.jobs, or any other online community you belong to. Naturally you'll want to avoid sharing info such as your Social Security Number and minimize the contact information. For example, rather than using your email address, use an email address created specifically for the job search. (But please keep them professional; don't use goofy emails addresses like queenbee@emailprovider.com!)
Any tips that you find help with online profiles/resumes?
